The reuse of goods and the preparation for reuse are key elements of the European policies regarding waste management (Dir 2008/98/EC) and resource efficiency strategies.

PRISCA - Pilot project for scale re-use starting from bulky waste stream – is a project financed by the European Commission through the Life Plus Environment 2011 program, that aims to demonstrate the feasibility of two Reuse Centers, one in Vicenza and one in San Benedetto del Tronto, where reusable goods from solid urban waste flows are sent for preparation for reuse operations to enter a second life, instead of being disposed to landfill.

PRISCA involves the collaboration of six Italian partners:

Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies - project leader and scientific supervisor
Occhio del Riciclone, Roma - Technical supervisor
Cooperativa sociale Insieme, Vicenza – Local experimental partner
Valore Ambiente srl, Vicenza – Support to the Local experimental partner
Comune di San Benedetto del Tronto, (AP) - Local experimental partner
WWF Ricerche e Progetti, Roma e Napoli – awareness raising and dissemination of good practices

The project started in September 2012 and will end in June 2015.

Objective of the project is to test a model for a Reuse Centre in order to reduce significantly the amount of reusable items from solid urban waste flows currently disposed in landfill so as to make it reproducible at European level. The project will also contribute to increase awareness among the general public on waste prevention and reduction themes, focusing, in particular on the reuse of second life items. and on the reduction of environmental impacts connected to the implementation of environmental sustainable consumption behaviors, through an intense communication and dissemination activity and networking.

The project website offers information on the project and on the ongoing activities, on the general issue and also some useful related links. Technical and dissemination materials are available for download.
